Bridging the Accessibility Gap

As a usability tester and lead, working alongside a team of sight-impaired professionals, we strive to bridge the accessibility gap. Our efforts focus on highlighting the importance of usability testing with disabled users to uncover accessibility barriers that may be overlooked in traditional accessibility audits.

While meeting accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is essential, it's crucial to think beyond mere compliance. Accessibility is about creating inclusive experiences that work for everyone, regardless of abilities.

When designing or developing digital products, it's tempting to ask, "Can we make this WCAG conformant?" However, the more important question is, "Can we make this accessible?" The answer often depends on the implementation, and usability testing with disabled users is key to ensuring that products are truly accessible.

Conducting usability testing with disabled users is crucial for identifying accessibility barriers. Even when products meet accessibility standards, users may still encounter issues. By involving disabled users in the testing process, designers and developers can gain valuable insights into how to improve accessibility.

The European Accessibility Act requires products to be accessible to disabled users, rather than simply meeting specific accessibility standards. This shift in focus emphasizes the importance of usability testing and ensuring that products work for everyone.

There are various ways to conduct usability testing with disabled users, from DIY approaches to partnering with organizations that specialize in accessibility testing. What's essential is that designers and developers prioritize usability testing to create inclusive, accessible experiences.

By working together, we can bridge the accessibility gap and create a more inclusive digital landscape.
